News - September 2025

Hello everyone! Here is an update on happenings at the cemetery.

Save Lochaber Bay Cemetery Fund Raiser

Last fall we raised the alarm that we will run out of money by 2039 or sooner as expenses have outstripped our income. See Reality Check.

The goal of the Lochaber Bay Cemetery Fund Raiser is to raise our asset total to over $70,000 from the current $34,000 during the next 10 years. This would push our demise well past the year 2050 and might even keep us afloat longer with modest annual donations.

Progress Report

In 2024 (year ending Dec 31st), we met our target of $5000!

Many thanks to KM,HB,RJ,AL,PL,DB,SK,ET,PC,SH,LH and JM for your donations!

We have 5 people that made it to our Cemetery Saver Honour Roll for donations of $500 or more in 2024. A special thanks to PL,AL,DB,HB and JM.

So far in 2025 we've raised $2200 which is 43% of our $5000 target. Many thanks to GL,JP*,DA* and LB. (* Cemetery Saver Honour Roll).

The Plan

As you can see in this chart, we can reach our goal if we consistently raise $5000 per year augmented with some estate bequests.

With over 200 names in our email list, we believe this goal is achievable.

You have never made a donation before? Now is the time! It will feel good and your ancestors will be pleased you care about preserving this cemetery, this website and the Canadian history it presents.

The Graph

Projections are with inflation at 2% and interest rates are 'inflation plus 1.5%'.

What can you do ...

Balancing Act

As much as we'd like to separate the 'Fund Raiser' Investment Account from 'General Operations' Account, we simply don't have the cash flow to do that. What we do is pay our expenses from donations and then we move the surplus into the Investment Account. This amount will vary yearly depending on donation levels.

Interments

Garfield Ward Lamb: 1945-08-05 to 2025-03-19

Garfield was a loyal supporter of the Lochaber Bay Cemetery and we have fleeting photos of him at the 2012 Old Boys reunion. Garfield worked at a number of sound studios and became known as an "audio guru" to his many musician friends. In August, good friends in Morin-Heights staged a 'GarfFest' to honour what would have been his 80th birthday. The by-line went something like this: "Garfield Lamb - a hell of a guy! Honour Garfield's memory at the Morin Heights Legion from 2pm til the wheels fall off - with music, stories, food and laughter as we celebrate the joy he brought to us all".

Garfield was interred at the Lochaber Bay Cemetery August 1st, 2025 as witnessed by family and friends and to the sounds of a piper.

Workday - Spring 2026 - Come visit us!

This spring we will be spending a day (or 2) replacing some rotting boards on our fence and doing some white and green painting.

You are welcome to come visit us, maybe pick up a paint brush (or not), and sit with us at lunch time to share stories and refuel.

If this interests you, send us a Message ⇗ and we'll let you know what date(s) we have chosen.

Best Dressed Headstone

The CAMERON headstone gets the prize for 'best dressed' this year.

We think it's the simplicity of the red flowers ... with extra points for dedication. Year after year we see a recurring flower tribute every time we enter the cemetery with camera in hand!

May the Cameron's never be forgotten.

Cemetery Maintenance

We are lucky to have as our caretaker Vincent Boucher. He has helped us with a number of headstone projects and of course he does a great job cutting our grass. Vincent also does the trimming our hedge - every second year (can't afford yearly).

This year is a hedge-trimming year so donations appreciated!

Guest Book - Visitors

As you know, we installed a log book in 2022 and we encourage visitors to record comments and leave a hint of who they are and why they are visiting the cemetery.

We are well past 20 pages of comments now as of June 2025!

You need to come and take a read through the logbook .. it is a rewarding experience and of course you get to have lunch on a green bench!

Many thanks to everyone that visits and leaves a message. It enriches our cemetery greatly.

Our investment fund is small (from donations dating back decades!) which provides an income stream that does not fully cover the grass cutting .. let alone the hedge trimming!

All donations are welcome and help us cut the grass and preserve our investment funds for future income.

Opening on Board of Directors

The Lochaber Bay Cemetery Company was established in 1936 with letters patent signed during the reign of King Edward VIII (see Letters-Patent-01 ⇗).

We have an opening for a Director and if you are interested please let us know!

We meet by zoom at least once a year for our AGM and organize a memorial service usually every 2 years. We also organize a work day (or two) periodically to do maintenance at the cemetery which usually involves fence work (replacing boards, painting).

If you would like to become a board member and contribute to the longevity of the cemetery use our contact form here.
